With spring just around the corner, you’re probably thinking about your lawn. Some focus on landscaping needs, such as flowers, shrubbery, or trees, while others want the best looking lawn in the neighborhood. A riding lawn mower can cut down the time it takes to keep your yard looking fantastic. There are several types available, however. Some just cut the grass, while others can do just about anything you might possibly need. Here are three things you need to look for to make sure you’re getting a quality machine, but also one that fits your needs.

1. Decide What Features Are Important to You

Since there are riding lawn mowers that are designed for residential and commercial use, this will be the first decision you’ll need to make. While it may be tempting to buy the largest, most feature filled machine you can find, it could actually make things more difficult. You may have a hard time maneuvering in smaller places if you have a commercial sized machine. However, if you will be working on an acre or more, then it might help you to have a larger one.

If you want to mulch the cut grass, you can find a few models that allow you to switch between mulching and cutting without leaving your seat. Some are 4 wheel drive models and others have power steering. Determing which features are important will help you “weed” out the models that don’t cut it.

2. Choose Your Favorite Manufacturer

There are obviously some manufacturers that stand out from the crowd. If a particular make is important to you, then start there. However, you’ll also want to make sure they offer a model that you need.

3. Check the Warranty Infomration

In today’s economy, it pays to cover all your bases. A warranty is esepcially important to protect your investment. Most riding lawn mower warranties cover a specific number of years, as well as a specific number of hours on the motor. Some will not honor a warranty if you have the machines serviced anywhere but at one of their certified dealers. Make sure you know all the ins and outs of the warranties before you make your purchase.

With spring and summer on it’s way, you’ll find some tremendous deals available right now. Some companies are still trying to move last year’s models to make room for the new ones. This means that you can grab up a great riding lawn mower at fantastic savings. But you better hurry – these sales aren’t likely to last long!

So you have either bought or built your own shed and now you need some way to easily get your lawn mowers and other lawn and garden equipment in it without straining your back.  A DIY shed ramp is just the ticket… however, if not built correctly you ramp could collapse under the weight of you and the equipment or could be a slippery slope when wet and cause serious injury.

A ramp should incline at a rate of 3” per vertical foot.  Any steeper than that and it could cause a problem in a couple of different ways.  First, if you have a driving lawn mower with a belly blade on it the blade will hit the entrance to the shed if the ramp is to steep.

Also, the wood you build the ramp with can get a thin layer of algae build up on it that when wet is slippery as ice and you could fall and injure yourself or your tractor could slip off to one side and result in a dangerous fall.

So, It is important to have enough slope on your ramp so it is not to steep.  The next thing you need to make sure of is that you build it sturdy enough to handle the weight it will be subject to.  A 200 pound man riding on a 400 pound lawn tractor can put a lot of stress on the ramp and it could collapse.

As a minimum, you should use 4” X 4” pressure treated lumber for the ramp framing set no more than 12” apart and use ¾” pressure treated plywood for the ramp surface.  It is a good idea to use either non-skid or real rubber on the deck to prevent slipping when the ramp becomes wet.

You can buy metal shed ramps as well but they are expensive and a DIY model made from wood can be every bit as safe and effective if constructed properly.

Any shed that you build will need some type of ramp system if you are driving any type of vehicle into it and if the foundation lifts you shed more than a foot or so off the ground the nice incline walkway is easier on the knees as well.
